After his study and working as physical therapist, he started his study psychology at the University of Amsterdam. After this study he started working in the field of psychiatry. First in Eindhoven, later in GGZ Noord Holland Noord (GGZ NHN), a mental health institute in the north-west of the Netherlands.
Soon he started to work as advisor innovation of care in GGZ NHN specialised in working on rehabilitation and recovery. He was involved in the deinstitutionalisation of persons with a severe mental illness (SMI) and the start of the case management teams.
Together with Remmers van Veldhuizen, he transformed the case management teams in the GGZ NHN in to the Function Assertive Community Treatment Teams (FACT).
The FACT model is now a well described model and used all over the Netherlands. In GGZ NHN he also introduced and implemented Individual Placement and Support (one of the Evidence Based Practices) in the organisation and is currently involved with the introduction of the strengths model into the FACT teams.
Recently he introduced a shared decision-making program into the psychiatry. He is advisor and auditor to the CCAF and as an expert involved in the nationwide project of recovery oriented care for persons who stay in long stay care.
